Collin County vs. Dallas County Criminal Courts: Key Differences

Two neighboring Texas counties with very different criminal court cultures. If your case is in Collin County vs. Dallas County, the approach matters.

Size and Volume

Dallas County is one of Texas's most populous counties, with a massive criminal docket. Collin County is smaller but among the fastest-growing. This volume difference drives some procedural differences:

DA Philosophy

Dallas County and Collin County DA's offices historically take different approaches to pre-trial diversion, deferred adjudication, and plea bargaining. Dallas tends to offer more diversion for first-time offenders; Collin County takes a stricter approach but has robust pre-trial diversion for certain Class A/B misdemeanors.

Case Pacing

Grand Jury

Both counties use grand juries for felony indictments (Grand Jury). Grand juries meet weekly in both counties. A no-bill results in dismissal.

Municipal Courts

Dallas County has many municipal courts (Dallas, Irving, Mesquite, Garland, Grand Prairie, Coppell, etc.). Collin County similarly has multiple (Frisco, Plano, McKinney, Allen, Wylie, Prosper). Class C cases stay local.

Bond Options

Dallas County often allows personal recognizance (PR) bonds for lower-level offenders more liberally than Collin County. For serious felonies, both counties typically require cash or surety bonds.
