What is the Lew Sterrett Justice Center and what happens after booking?

Lew Sterrett is a three-tower detention campus in downtown Dallas operated by the Dallas County Sheriff’s Department — the seventh-largest jail system in the country, with an average daily population exceeding 6,000.

All three facilities share the campus at 111 West Commerce Street. The North Tower is the oldest and largest, built in 1993 for maximum-security detainees. The West Tower specializes in mental-health housing. The Suzanne Lee Kays Facility introduced direct-supervision architecture to the complex. Together the three buildings hold a combined rated capacity of approximately 7,126 beds, though daily population fluctuates based on court volume and transfer timing from city jails.

What happens after arrest — the booking-to-release flow

1. Arrest & transfer to Lew SterrettMost Dallas County cities transfer Class A/B misdemeanor and felony arrestees to Lew Sterrett once a case is filed. (Garland, for example, holds detainees locally until the case is filed, then transfers to Dallas County.) Class C municipal arrests may be resolved at city-level detention.

How do I visit someone at the Lew Sterrett Justice Center?

Dallas County offers both video visits (through Smart Communications at smartinmate.com) and in-person visits on a last-name schedule. Plan ahead: video visits must be booked at least 72 hours in advance, and the system is closed every Wednesday.

Register an account on smartinmate.com, search for the inmate by name or booking number, and select an available time slot. Children under 17 are not permitted during weekday video sessions. In-person visitation

In-person sign-up begins 30 minutes before the visit window opens. Out-of-town visitors traveling from 75 or more miles away receive one 40-minute visit on their first trip, then the standard 20-minute limit on subsequent visits.

What to bring & dress code

Arrive with a valid government-issued photo ID and nothing else — the facility does not allow bags, purses, phones, cameras, tobacco, electronic devices, outside food, or outside drinks past the checkpoint. Dress conservatively: the facility prohibits revealing shorts, sundresses, halter tops, open-toed shoes, see-through garments, low-cut clothing, sleeveless shirts, and khaki or military-style clothing. Visitors in prohibited attire will be turned away.

How do I put money on the books or send a commissary package?

Dallas County uses Access Corrections for trust-account deposits and Access Securepak (dallascountypackages.com) for commissary packages. No personal checks, money orders, or payroll checks have been accepted since February 14, 2022.

For all deposit methods you will need the inmate’s full legal name and booking number. Funds deposited to the trust account are used by the inmate for phone time, commissary items purchased through the jail, and other in-facility purchases. Commissary packages ordered through dallascountypackages.com are a separate program that allows you to send approved food and hygiene items directly.

How can I call, message, or write to someone at Lew Sterrett?

Inmate phone calls are managed through the in-facility phone system. Standard mail goes through a processing center in Seminole, Florida — not directly to the jail address. Legal mail has its own separate PO Box.

Do not send mail directly to 111 West Commerce Street. The Seminole, FL processing center handles all general inmate correspondence before it is delivered to Lew Sterrett.

Prohibited items in mail: Writing materials (stamps, pens, paper, envelopes), glue, staples, tape, two-sided letters, unsigned greeting cards, cards or photos larger than 8″×10″, Polaroid photos, obscene or violent material, profanity on envelopes, tobacco, clothing, jewelry, books not shipped directly from a publisher or bookstore, and any items with glued or adhered surfaces.

Release process & realistic timing

After bond is posted and accepted, the defendant is processed out of the Lew Sterrett facility. Processing typically takes a few hours but can extend to six hours or more on weekends, holidays, or during high-intake periods. How do I get to the Lew Sterrett Justice Center?

The facility sits in the Stemmons Corridor of downtown Dallas, close to the I-35E / I-30 interchange — one of the most recognizable junctions in the city.

From I-35E northbound or southbound: take the Commerce Street exit and head east toward downtown. The Lew Sterrett complex will be on your left at 111 West Commerce Street. From I-30 westbound: take the Sylvan Avenue / Commerce Street exit and follow Commerce Street east. Security screening

All visitors entering the facility for in-person visits must pass through a security checkpoint. Prohibited items (phones, bags, cameras, weapons, outside food) will be confiscated or you will be denied entry. Arrive without prohibited items to avoid delay. There is no secure storage for confiscated phones or electronics at the facility entrance.
